What Aziziye Means for Us

A mosque signifies a gathering place and a centre for the community, some calling it their second home. When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was migrating from Mecca to Medina, he reached the village of Quba. He immediately laid out the foundations to build and establish the first mosque in Islam. Similarly, when his (ﷺ) migration was complete in Medina, he prioritised building a mosque, and next to it an educational institution.

A mosque is a sacred place where where we grow up and learn the ropes of life in; where we grow again and get married in; where we pass away and our funeral is held in. It is a space where disputes are put aside, where worshippers huddle together to form rows for their creator, where we share each other's joys and struggles.

This is Aziziye Mosque.

Aziziye Mosque: A Brief History and Its Role in the Community

Aziziye Mosque:

Aziziye Mosque was established by the UK Turkish Islamic Association. In 1980, the community rented a space in Simson House, converting it into a mosque. The current mosque building, previously a cinema, was purchased in May 1983, modified, and officially opened for worship in 1984, where we continue to provide and expand our range of services years later.

Our History

In 1984, shortly before Eid, efforts began to prepare the mosque in time for the Eid prayer. The cinema’s remaining chairs were removed, and some carpets were laid on the floor. The initial plan was to remove the carpets after Eid and continue praying in the renovated section of the building. However, as the congregation grew, the temporary carpets remained in place permanently. For 8–9 years, prayers continued in this makeshift arrangement, on a sloped floor. As the community expanded and financial resources improved, the current architectural plan for the mosque was developed, and through great effort and sacrifice, this beautiful place of worship was established.

Why it's Important

A mosque serves as a spiritual and social hub. From birth to death, it plays a role in every stage of life—hosting prayers, marriages, funerals, and educational programs. Following the example of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Aziziye Mosque continues this tradition, serving as a place of worship, learning, and community support.
